As a school nurse, you will have the opportunity to promote health and well-being among school-aged children and young people, both within the school setting and in collaboration with their families. As a specialist community public health nurse (SCPHN), you play a crucial role in addressing the unique health needs of students and supporting the overall health and resilience of the school community.
Responsibilities:
Health Assessments and Screenings: Conduct health assessments and screenings to identify health issues and risk factors among students. Assess and monitor growth and development, vision and hearing, immunization status, and mental health concerns. Provide referrals for further evaluation and treatment as needed.
Health Promotion and Education: Deliver health promotion initiatives and educational programs to promote healthy behaviors and prevent illness and injury. Provide guidance on nutrition, physical activity, hygiene, sexual health, and mental well-being to empower students to make informed decisions about their health.
Chronic Disease Management: Manage and support students with chronic health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, allergies, and epilepsy. Develop individualized care plans in collaboration with healthcare providers and families to ensure effective management of chronic illnesses and minimize disruptions to learning.
First Aid and Emergency Care: Provide first aid and emergency care for students who become ill or injured during school hours. Assess and treat minor injuries, illnesses, and allergic reactions, and coordinate emergency response procedures for more serious medical incidents.
Health Counseling and Support: Offer confidential health counseling and support to students facing physical or emotional challenges. Address concerns related to body image, self-esteem, bullying, peer pressure, substance abuse, and mental health issues, and provide referrals to appropriate resources and services.
Collaboration and Partnership: Collaborate with school administrators, teachers, counselors, and parents to address health-related issues affecting students. Participate in multidisciplinary teams and school health committees to develop and implement policies, programs, and interventions to promote a healthy and safe school environment.
Where You Will Work:
As a school nurse, you will work within educational settings such as primary schools, secondary schools, boarding schools, and special education centers. Your role may involve providing healthcare services in school health clinics, nurse’s offices, classrooms, or community outreach programs.
